What is TORe?

Transoral outlet reduction (TORe) is a nonsurgical procedure that modifies or changes a prior gastric bypass surgery. Gastric bypass is a weight-loss surgery that creates a small stomach pouch attached to a lower portion of your small intestine. Following this procedure, you eat less and absorb fewer calories to lose weight.

TORe is an endoscopic procedure that uses an endoscope to examine and repair or revise a gastric bypass. An endoscope is a small flexible tube Dr. Williams inserts into your mouth and advances into your stomach to address the issue.

He may perform TORe to tighten the gastric outlet, the passageway between your stomach and small intestine. Food may pass through faster if the gastric outlet widens too much.

Am I a candidate for TORe?

Dr. Williams determines if you’re a candidate for TORe following a consultation. He takes a patient-centered and conservative approach to care. He asks detailed questions about your surgical history, concerns, and goals to fully understand your needs.

He may consider you a candidate for TORe if you had a gastric bypass procedure and you’re experiencing weight regain. You may gain weight if your gastric outlet widens following surgery. During TORe, Dr. Williams uses sutures to tighten the gastric outlet.

What happens during TORe?

Dr. Williams customizes your TORe procedure and reviews the details at your pre-surgical visit. He performs TORe using anesthesia, so you’re relaxed and comfortable during the procedure. 

Dr. Williams inserts the endoscope into your mouth and slowly advances it to the stomach and the gastric outlet. He uses the endoscope to stitch and tighten the opening. You then go to the recovery area for monitoring.

The entire procedure takes less than an hour, and you go home the same day.

What can I expect after TORe?

You can expect to lose some weight following TORe. The amount of weight loss varies and depends on how much weight you regained following your original gastric bypass.

However, many patients reach a lighter weight following TORe than their lightest weight following gastric bypass. Dr. Williams provides guidance regarding diet and nutrition before and after your procedure to get the best results.
