What is an endogastric sleeve?

An endogastric sleeve is a type of weight-loss surgery that uses an endoscope and sutures to decrease the size of your stomach. The endogastric sleeve limits the amount of food you can eat, helping you feel full faster and absorb fewer calories so you lose weight.

The endogastric sleeve is similar to the sleeve gastrectomy weight loss surgery. However, Dr. Williams doesn’t make any incisions or remove any parts of your stomach during the procedure. 

Am I a candidate for an endogastric sleeve?

Dr. Williams conducts a thorough evaluation to determine if you’re a candidate for the endogastric sleeve. 

He may consider you a candidate for this minimally invasive bariatric procedure if you have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher and have trouble losing weight following a traditional diet and exercise program.

Not everyone who’s overweight is a candidate for the endogastric sleeve procedure. Dr. Williams takes a patient-centered approach to care and conducts a thorough evaluation so he can fully understand your concerns and goals and make the appropriate recommendations.

What happens during an endogastric sleeve?

Dr. Williams customizes your endogastric sleeve procedure and reviews the details at your pre-surgical consultation. The endogastric sleeve is an outpatient procedure, but you’ll be under general anesthesia and asleep during the surgery.

For an endogastric sleeve, Dr. Williams inserts an endoscope (a thin, flexible tube with a light and camera) into your mouth and advances it toward your stomach. He inserts suturing tools through the endoscope to create a smaller stomach pouch.

The entire procedure takes about 60-90 minutes.

What can I expect after an endogastric sleeve?

Dr. Williams gives you specific at-home care instructions following your endogastric sleeve procedure. This includes a special diet you need to follow during the first few weeks to support recovery and reduce the risk of rupturing the sutures. 

Though weight-loss results vary, many people lose anywhere from 10 to 20% of their current body weight during the first year following the procedure.
